The Foundations of Tawheed
Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim.
Tawheed — the Islamic concept of the absolute Oneness of Allah ﷻ — is the foundation upon which every pillar of the deen rests. The Prophet ﷺ spent thirteen years in Mecca before a single verse about prayer, fasting, or zakat was revealed, calling people exclusively to Tawheed. This alone tells us its rank.
The Three Categories
Classical scholars categorized Tawheed into three interconnected dimensions:
Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah — affirming that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Lord of all that exists. Even the mushrikeen of Mecca affirmed this category, yet it was not sufficient for them to enter Islam.
Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah — affirming that Allah alone deserves worship. This is the core of the shahada and the area where the Quraysh failed. It means directing all acts of worship — salah, dua, hope, fear, love, slaughter, vows — to Allah alone.
Tawheed al-Asma' was-Sifat — affirming the names and attributes of Allah as He described Himself in the Quran and as the Prophet ﷺ described Him, without distortion, negation, resemblance to creation, or asking how.
Why This Matters Today
In an age of spiritual confusion, interfaith relativism, and the blurring of lines between monotheism and shirk, a grounded understanding of Tawheed is not academic — it is a matter of the heart's salvation.
Every Muslim should know what they are affirming when they say Lā ilāha illallāh — not just as words, but as a living conviction that shapes how they seek help, who they fear, and how they understand every blessing and trial.
May Allah ﷻ grant us firm and correct Tawheed, and make it the light by which we live and the last words we speak. Ameen.
